The PHP Workshop Aftereffects

Posted By Saju Chithran on May 30th, 1999

“We couldn’t have expected more” said a participant of the PHP workshop that was conducted in CUSAT today. And that would be by no means an overstatement. The workshop conducted by Mr. Binny VA epitomized the saying short and sweet. In just over 5 hours participants, many of whom didn’t have a basic idea even about HTML, were working with stuff like SQL Injection hack protection in PHP. What was considered to be nerdy stuff by most of us turned out to be nothing more than a manipulation of quotes!( and some code of course).

You have to give credit to Mr. Binny for coming up with a piece of code that covered almost all basic aspects of PHP programming. The day started with him introducing us to the way variables are declared and ended with us making a simple website having user login replete with SQL injection protection and a MySQL database. We started off at quarter past 10. Barring a half an hour break for lunch at 1:00 pm we were all sitting there till 4:00 pm. People who are generally adept at sleeping even during a 1 hr class were open-eyed till the very end.

There was never a dull moment. Everything seemed like a work of art. Each snippet of code that he illustrated was a stroke in his masterpiece workshop. He would deliberately give a basic code and work (and make us work) towards a better code. If there was something called personal attention man I saw it today. Each and every doubt that was asked was cleared with calm and composure. And things like regular expressions that were enigmas to us in our college curriculum were taught with such élan that I really am thinking about studying the subject once again.

No amount of thanks would be able to convey our sense of gratitude to Binny. He taught us for free, was more than accommodating to our incorrigibilities and yes showed us how down to earth high fliers can be. Thanks to Kenney Jacob for facilitating this workshop. And thanks to the TEN and Campus Blogging initiatives for bringing us together in the first place.

Vote for MAD - Make India Proud

Posted By admin on May 30th, 1999

I want to introduce you to the most wonderful NGO in the world, which was working right under our noses and still we failed to see how they were Making a Difference

Make A Difference (M.A.D) is a youth volunteer network that currently functions in the three cities of Cochin, Pune and Chennai… 312 volunteers teach more than 1200 underprivileged kids English and computer skills in these three cities to enable them to have better career prospects…

These children live in street shelters and orphanages. Without proper guidance, their lives will go astray. MAD makes sure that they have the proper life skills to make it in life. Then MAD tries to get them placed at jobs where they can live their potential…

MAD was recently picked as one of fifteen finalists for the international Youth Social Entrepreneur Awards which is a prestigious award bestowed by the Ashoka group. MAD became the only Indian entry in this competition by in spite of 521 nominations from 60 odd countries. The final winner will be picked by online voting.

Let’s try and bring pride to our country by spreading word about the achievements of our countrymen. To stand up and be recognized in such a multi-faced international crowd is an achievement in itself.

Spread the word in every way we know, post in orkut, mail friends and get them to vote.
