Flash Mob for a global wake up call

Posted By admin on September 15th, 2009

Climate change is putting life on earth in peril. There is still time to build a greener, safer world. But the clock is ticking. In December world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to decide our destiny. We want our political leaders to be in Copenhagen and to show historic leadership in achieving a treaty which is fabulous. The world needs a wake-up call on climate change. In September a perfect storm will gather with the the UN General Assembly on Sept 22 and the G20 leaders meet on 24-25.
A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.
In Kerala, the flash mob will be held in Trivandrum, the capital at 3.50 pm..Calling all youth out for a once-again Youth Climate Action to show that a demand is needed from the public side for a binding treaty by all the world leaders and we want our leaders to know and understand that the time to act and take up actions is NOW

On August 29th, the Flash Mob conducted at Oberon Mall, in Cochin, was successful in sending a strong voice to the public regarding the importance of the UN summit on Climate Change to be held from Dec7 in Copenhagen..Also the day saw hundreds of youth from different parts of the state, supporting organizations

PHP Workshop at CUSAT

Posted By Saju Chithran on May 9th, 2009

TEN India and Campus Blogging Initiative is organizing a Free PHP workshop for the Sixth semester students of CUSAT. Before going into the details as to the venue timings etc I would like to shed some light on the backdrop that led to this initiative.

Most of the mini projects in the computer science department were being made in PHP. But the students (as is the case in most colleges) do not have any idea about what PHP is or how to work with it. Taking cognizance of this fact Mr. Binny VA came forward to help the students out. He is a professional LAMP developer and has extensive free lance experience in developing PHP based projects. The workshop would be held from 10 am to 3pm on Sunday,11-01-09 at room No. 14 of the Old SOE building in CUSAT. Hopefully this benevolence shown by Mr Binny would encourage other professional developers to come forward and share their knowledge on the plethora of languages and software that a student in Computer Science has to deal with.
Since the only one classroom has been allocated we have already registered 15 students who would be coming for this workshop. Hopefully we will organize this on a bigger scale next time around
We would like to thank Mr. Kenney Jacob for facilitating our interaction with Mr Binny. We hope to further work together with him in the future for organizing camps of this nature.

An Honest Report on Campus Bloggers Meet

Posted By admin on May 23rd, 2008

Is blogging an easy task? Is it for everybody? What are the basics that one needs to know before he sets foot in this mysterious world of words, programming and search engine optimization??

Well, the answers would be: yes, yes, and nothing that can’t be handled in one session by the campus blogging team.
A handful of blogger wannabes and beginner bloggers assembled at the Mind Parlor, Ponnurunni, on 19th October, for precisely this purpose. Though, initially, there was a fear that perhaps the experts would outnumber the students two to one, a couple of late arrivals set an even field for the event.

It all started out with Kenney’s description of the campus blogging initiative. The opportunities and the benefits of having such a programme were discussed at length. There were also sporadic discussions of the possible interpretations of the campus blogging logo. The three sites which have already embraced the revolution are progressing along nicely, Sree Buddha College’s ‘vosree.com’ deserving special mention.

Seeing vosree.com, one gets the distinct feeling of being within a campus. The motorcycle diaries, the lab stories, the pranks and the trivial comments all go a long way in setting the environment. All in all, probably a must have for every college. A campus outside a campus. Though, the advantage of this one being, you can never get suspended or dismissed, you will only get banned. 

Then it was Anand’s turn to take the floor and try to impress the newbies with WordPress talk. The blogging platform is one of the most popular, and has been catching on like wild fire since its launch. The most spectacular feature of WordPress probably lies in the amount of customization that it is capable of undergoing. Whatever the blogger’s needs maybe, there is a good chance that you he might find a plugin already there, all set to do the job for him. Given the features, the platform’s success and popularity are no real surprise.

Then it was time to look at the technology that drives the entire system. The servers that host the platform, and the people who take care of the servers. (Forgot the name. Sorry) took the assembled on a lightning tour of the nuances of the entire process, astonishing some, confusing many, and boring one. 

DSC00729

That finished off a day where a lot of people got to learn a lot of stuff, and some took the opportunity to show off with what knowledge they had of the blogging world. But, the true achievement of the day was not just that. The true achievement was the formation of a support group that has the potential of educating more in the future.

DSC00728

The effort is on already to outnumber the trainers by a substantial number for the next meeting, to ensure that they do not show off as much as they had the luxury of doing this time. Hope you will be there with us then as well. Counting on it. See ya!!
